Founded in 1888, The San Diego Rowing Club is a competitive, recreational rowing organization in San Diego, California. Located at 525 East Harbor Drive in San Diego, the SDRC offers programs for men and women of all ages. The Club also competes in major regattas throughout the year. Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn the sport or a seasoned athlete, the SDRC is a great place to start.
For a small monthly fee, members can enjoy the benefits of the SDRC’s Master’s Competitive Program. This program is aimed at aspiring athletes, focusing on technique and fitness. Several of the Program’s alumni have won multiple races and National Championships. In addition to the Masters Program, the SDRC also has a Pre-Masters category for athletes under 27 years of age.
The SDRC’s boathouse is located on Mission Bay’s El Carmel Point. The facility features four bays for boats and a weightlifting room. It’s one of the best boathouses on the West Coast. The Club offers a variety of equipment and has one of the largest fleets of club boats in the state.
In the past, the Club primarily offered rowing and swimming. However, as the popularity of rowing rose, the Club began to offer more opportunities for competitors. The Club’s membership grew to over 100, but the boathouse facilities were deteriorating and the Club was unable to keep up with demand. By 1978, the Club was facing extinction, but twenty members fought to keep it alive. After eight years, the Club raised $2,000 and acquired a new home for the boathouse. This building, renamed the South End, is still active today.
The SDRC’s Masters Competitive Program is a year-round program that is run by a safety-certified coach. The program focuses on technique and fitness and emphasizes the importance of year-round coaching. The program has won numerous races and National Championships and is considered a premier training program for rowers at all levels.
In addition to the Club’s competitive programming, the San Diego Rowing Club also offers a variety of recreational activities. For example, the Row for the Cure raises money for cancer research. The Crew Classic is a world-class rowing event that attracts rowers and spectators of all levels. Aside from competition, the event includes grand hospitality events.
The Club’s boathouse is equipped with 40 ergometers and a small weightlifting facility. The Club also has a rowing shell that allows rowers to practice self-rescue. The boathouse is surrounded by beautiful scenery, and there are showers and other facilities. The site has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The San Diego Rowing Club is dedicated to introducing the sport of rowing to new generations. The club has a long history of promoting the sport, and has a diverse group of members who are committed to sharing their passion for the sport with others. As the popularity of rowing grows, the San Diego Rowing Club continues to be a major influence in the sport’s evolution.
